QUARTET SAN FRANCISCO For Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz season opening night, Quartet San Francisco, tango competition winners and 2007 double Grammy nominees for their CD “Látigo”, will be performing the best of their Latin-infused sounds including Libertango by Astor Piazzolla, La Cumparsita by G.H. Matos Rodriguez, Comme il faut by Edurado Arolas as well as jazz pieces from the most renowned jazz composers. The quartet will also be previewing compositions from their upcoming album “Whirled Chamber Music”, a North American based project – mixture of blues, funk, jazz, tango, and rock – featuring works of Raymond Scott, Duke Ellington, Chick Corea and Jeremy Cohen. Quartet San Francisco delivers an irresistible mixture of genre-bending world chamber music. Virtuosic and authentic tangueros, passionate jazz performers, playful and non-traditional in their delivery, QSF redefines the sound of chamber music. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Quartet San Francisco was founded by renowned jazz and classical violinist Jeremy Cohen, with Emily Onderdonk, violist, Joel Cohen, cellist, later joined by violinist Kayo Miki. Quartet San Francisco members have come together with the unified purpose of performing multiple styles of interesting and engaging music -- from tango to jazz, classical to Latin, contemporary to world music -- using the techniques and performance practices authentic to each style. Ticket holders for Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz season opening concert will be invited to enjoy complimentary hors-d’oeuvres and drinks served in the courtyard. “Tango, in Cohen's way of thinking, offers a fusion of Latin rhythms and the overt emotionalism of the European Romantics, and the group's playing reflects that combination. The melodic writing in his arrangements comes through with heartfelt eloquence, yet the rhythms are crisp and clear enough to dance to.” – San Francisco Chronicle “Even if classical chamber music is not your particular groove, Quartet San Francisco disintegrates the traditional mold and creates a brand new crucible that is pleasing to the ear. […] The musical excursion embarked on by Quartet San Francisco on "Látigo" provides ample creative energy and verve, which immediately stimulates a craving for more.” – Herald News, North Jersey “Quartet San Francisco seems to have tango in its blood, swinging and slinking through the notes with flair” – Bay Area Reporter
