In this first in-person concert since May 2019, LAV rings in the new season with a cherished program that promises to delight the audience, starting with young piano virtuoso Lilian Guo in her orchestral debut, performing Mozart’s beloved Concert Rondo in D Major. At a young age, the Ms. Guo already boasts a list of accolades, the most recent is an invitation to play Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall.
After the no-host bar intermission, Rachel Mellis performs French composer Camille Saint-Saëns’ Odelette, op.162. Saint-Saëns was a child prodigy himself, making his concert debut at the age of ten. This lesser-known work by Saint-Saëns is an arrangement of a concerto-like piece for flute and orchestra. Mellis will deftly guide the audience through this graceful interpretation of Saint-Saëns’s composition.
Fulfilling LAV’s mission to support music education, net profit from this concert goes towards the advancement and support of music education programs in schools in Southern California. After a year where students were asked to mute themselves on screen, the importance of getting back to practicing and performing music cannot be underestimated. Breaking away from the isolation of the past year and actively engaging in music is more important than ever. LAV continues to work in the following schools: Hollywood High School, Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, Violins of Hope, Pacoima Elementary School, and West Hollywood Youth Orchestra.
LAV is the only professional orchestra in the United States to offer aspiring young soloists the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the most talented musicians in the country. Access to a professional orchestra allows the next generation of aspiring talent to see how the pros work on their craft and pushes them to aspire to greater heights, bringing a professional career into focus.
Maestro Carlo Ponti is the founder of LAV, prior to which he was the music director and principal conductor of the San Bernardino Symphony, and Associate Conductor of the Russian National Orchestra.
