Born in Budapest and now based in Montreal, Sophie Lukacs is one of the few women in the world to master the kora. Traditionally, this West African instrument has been passed down through generations of men in griot families, making female kora players a true rarity.
Lukacs' incredible talent has opened doors for collaborations with renowned Malian musicians, including Habib Koité and Toumani Diabaté. She was also honored with the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Award for Global Roots Music Album of the Year.
Of Jewish Hungarian descent, Lukacs is the granddaughter of Eva Fahidi, a prominent writer and dancer who survived the Holocaust, and with whom she sang her first Hungarian folk songs. On stage, she performs with bass and percussion, singing in the many languages she speaks: French, Hungarian and Bambara.
